Most people arrive at a page like this holding a diagnosis, their own or somebody else’s, and looking for a promise. That is what “God’s promises for healing” means as a search — is there a sentence in this book that says the scan will come back clear.
There are real promises about healing and they are below. But an article that only gives you those is doing you harm, because at some point you will meet a Christian who prayed and was not healed, and if the only thing you have is a list of guarantees, that meeting will cost you your faith rather than theirs.

The Verses People Come Looking For
Exodus 15:26 — “I Am the LORD Who Heals You”
“I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I am the LORD who heals you.”” — Exodus 15:26 (WEBU)
This is where the name comes from — the LORD who heals you, spoken three days into the desert at the first undrinkable water Israel found. Two things worth holding together: it is a genuine self-description, and it is given inside a covenant with a nation, attached to conditions in the same sentence. Healing is named as part of who God is. It is not issued here as a personal guarantee to individuals.
Psalm 103:2-3 — Who Heals All Your Diseases
“Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits, who forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases,” — Psalm 103:2-3 (WEBU)
Forgiveness and healing named in the same breath, which is how the Old Testament usually treats them. David is telling his own soul not to forget, which means he is describing things already received rather than things being claimed — the psalm is a review of a life, not a demand slip. That does not weaken it. It changes what kind of sentence it is.
Psalm 147:3 — He Binds Up Their Wounds

Binds up is a bandaging word — hands-on, done as often as it takes, and it does not skip the healing time. This is the verse for the kind of damage nobody can see on a scan, and it is the one that holds up longest, because the promise it makes is one that has never needed qualifying.
Jeremiah 30:17 — “I Will Restore Health to You”
“For I will restore health to you, and I will heal you of your wounds,” says the LORD” — Jeremiah 30:17 (WEBU)
The clause that follows it in the same verse is the reason it was said: because they have called you an outcast. This is spoken to a nation everybody had written off, and the healing promised is the reversal of that verdict. Read whole, it is a promise about being wanted again rather than only about bodies.
Jeremiah 17:14 — “Heal Me, and I Will Be Healed”
“Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed. Save me, and I will be saved; for you are my praise.” — Jeremiah 17:14 (WEBU)
Not a promise but a prayer, and the grammar is worth noticing: Jeremiah asks and then states the outcome as though it were settled. This is the form a request takes when the person asking is not negotiating about whether God is able. It is also short enough to say in a waiting room.
Jeremiah 33:6 — Health and Healing
“behold, I will bring it health and healing, and I will cure them; and I will reveal to them abundance of peace and truth.” — Jeremiah 33:6 (WEBU)
Three verbs stacked — bring, cure, reveal — and the last one is the surprise. What is finally promised is not just a cure but abundance of peace and truth, which suggests that in Jeremiah’s mind the deepest sickness was never only physical.
Exodus 23:25 — Bread, Water, and Sickness
“You shall serve the LORD your God, and he will bless your bread and your water, and I will take sickness away from among you.” — Exodus 23:25 (WEBU)
Read who is being addressed. From among you is plural and national — this is covenant language to Israel about life in a land they had not yet entered, and it sits among laws about harvests and boundaries. It is a real promise. It is not a contract an individual can invoke, and the difference matters enormously to somebody holding a scan result.
The Verse That Gets Argued About
Isaiah 53:5 — By His Wounds We Are Healed
“But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.” — Isaiah 53:5 (WEBU)
The most quoted healing verse there is, and the surrounding lines are all about sin — transgressions, iniquities, punishment, peace. Healing arrives as the fourth item in a list of three others that are unmistakably moral.
1 Peter 2:24 — How the New Testament Reads It
“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness. You were healed by his wounds.” — 1 Peter 2:24 (WEBU)
This settles the argument as far as anyone can settle it, because Peter is quoting Isaiah 53 directly and telling you what he takes it to mean. The clause he attaches is having died to sins, might live to righteousness. Whatever else the wounds accomplished, the apostle who watched it happen applies the healing to sin.
That is not a small promise. It is simply a different one from the one people usually take from the verse, and being clear about it now saves a great deal of grief later.
The Prayer Scripture Actually Prescribes
James 5:14-16 — Call the Elders
“Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” — James 5:14-16 (WEBU)
The most concrete instruction in the New Testament about sickness, and it is corporate rather than private. The sick person calls; other people come; there is oil and there is prayer out loud. Nothing here suggests praying harder alone. And confess your sins to one another sits inside it, which means James expected the process to involve the kind of honesty most of us would rather avoid.
Four People in the New Testament Who Were Not Healed
This is the part almost every healing article leaves out, and none of us should be meeting it for the first time in a hospital corridor. It is all in Paul’s own letters, in the same New Testament that records the miracles.
2 Corinthians 12:7-9 — Paul Asked Three Times
“a thorn in the flesh was given to me… Concerning this thing, I begged the Lord three times that it might depart from me. He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”” — 2 Corinthians 12:7-9 (WEBU)
The man through whom other people were healed asked three times for his own condition to be removed, and the answer was no. Not silence — an answer, with a reason. “My grace is sufficient for you” is God declining the request and supplying something else in the same sentence. Anyone who has been told their prayer failed for lack of faith should be handed this passage.
2 Timothy 4:20 — Trophimus Left Sick
“Erastus remained at Corinth, but I left Trophimus at Miletus sick.” — 2 Timothy 4:20 (WEBU)
One line, no explanation, no apology. Paul mentions it the way you would mention any travel detail. A colleague was too ill to continue and was left behind, by the apostle whose handkerchiefs Acts says were used to heal people. The absence of comment is the striking part: it did not need explaining to the first readers.
1 Timothy 5:23 — A Little Wine
“Be no longer a drinker of water only, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities.” — 1 Timothy 5:23 (WEBU)
Paul’s response to a long-running health problem in his closest colleague is a practical remedy. Frequent infirmities — this had been going on. He does not rebuke Timothy’s faith or tell him to claim a promise; he gives medical advice, which is what the wine was. Scripture treats ordinary treatment as an obvious thing to reach for.
Philippians 2:25-27 — Sick Nearly to Death
“For indeed he was sick nearly to death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only, but on me also, that I might not have sorrow on sorrow.” — Philippians 2:25-27 (WEBU)
Epaphroditus recovered, and Paul calls that mercy — a word for something given, not something owed. The phrase underneath it is the honest one: “that I might not have sorrow on sorrow”. Paul is admitting he was braced for a second grief, which tells you plainly that he did not regard the recovery as guaranteed.
What Is Offered When the Healing Does Not Come
Psalm 41:3 — Sustained on the Sickbed
“The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.” — Psalm 41:3 (WEBU)
Sustain him on his sickbed — the help arrives while the person is still in it. That is a different promise from removal and, on a long illness, a more useful one: somebody holding the weight where the weight is, rather than waiting at the far end for you to arrive.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 — Renewed Day by Day
“Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward person is decaying, yet our inward person is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory” — 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (WEBU)
The most honest sentence about a failing body in the Bible, and Paul does not soften the first half. Decaying is what it says. What he sets against it is not a reversal but a second process running at the same time and in the other direction — renewed day by day, at the same rate the other thing is going.
Psalm 34:18 — Near to the Broken
“The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (WEBU)
Near is a position rather than a feeling, which is what makes it usable in a stretch where nothing is felt at all. The claim is about where God is, not about what you can currently detect — and it is made to people already crushed, not to people avoiding it.
Matthew 11:28-30 — Rest for Your Souls
““Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.” — Matthew 11:28-30 (WEBU)
A yoke is a beam across the shoulders of two animals, which is the detail the encouraging poster leaves off. He does not offer to remove the load. He offers to be the other half of it and to set the pace, which is what long illness actually needs.
Revelation 21:4 — The Healing That Is Certain
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more. The first things have passed away.”” — Revelation 21:4 (WEBU)
This is the one healing Scripture promises without conditions, and it is worth saying plainly: every Christian is healed, and some are healed on the other side of dying. That is not a consolation prize dressed up. It is the actual shape of the hope, and holding it is what lets somebody pray honestly for a cure without their faith depending on getting one.
How to Pray for Healing
Ask plainly and specifically. Jeremiah 17:14 is four words long and asks for the thing itself. Nothing in Scripture suggests God is put off by directness, and Paul asked three times about one condition.
Do it with other people. James 5:14 is the only detailed instruction on the subject and every part of it is corporate — call for the elders, let them pray over you, confess to one another. Praying alone is not the pattern given.
Use the doctor. Paul prescribed wine for Timothy’s stomach and Luke, who wrote a third of the New Testament, was a physician. Treating medicine and prayer as alternatives is not a biblical instinct; it is a modern one, and it costs people their lives.
Settle what you will do if the answer is no, before you need to know. The three at the furnace in Daniel 3 worked out their answer for the case where the rescue does not come, and it steadied them. Paul got a no and kept working. A faith that has already faced the possibility is not the same as one that shatters on contact with it.
If you are carrying a diagnosis, or caring for somebody who is, say so out loud to somebody this week. James assumes you will not do this alone, and the isolation does more damage than most people admit.
